Shaller Family Sholom East Campus
St. Paul, Minnesota

VAA provided structural and civil services for the three building continuing care campus.  The Weinberg Apartments offer its residents affordable independent housing.  The building consists of three-story timber-frame construction over one level of underground precast concrete parking.  The structural design included unique heavy timber framing spanning over a large open activity room.

The Bentson Assisted Living building is a 5-story concrete structure.  Due to soil conditions, drilled pier deep foundations and a structural slab-on-grade were utilized.  The upper floors are comprised of post-tensioned concrete slabs.  The facility consists of 78,000 sf and 66 total units.  Amenities include a large fitness area adjacent to an aquatic center with a therapy pool, an adult day care and a commons community room and dining area on each floor.  This building is connected via an auditorium/chapel with a small commons area.  The commons has two structural systems, including composite steel framing which spans over the auditorium/chapel with post-tension concrete floor framing.

Chapman Sholom Home East building, the third building on the campus linked by the commons areas, is a four-story nursing (skilled) facility for residents and provides 43,700 sf (91 stalls) of parking and 117,000 sf (92 beds) of nursing care.  The structural system consists of drilled pier deep foundations with floor/roof and slabs of post-tensioned concrete.  Concrete post-tensioned transfer beams were used to shift column locations from the living spaces (upper floors) and coordinate with a parking/drive lane layout (lower floors).  The amenities in the nursing facility include a therapy garden on the roof.  The therapy garden includes unique real life applications such as, a car to practice getting in and out, a curb for practicing stepping on and off and varying surface types for walking on.  Each wing of the facility includes dining, commons area, spa, salon and children’s play area.

The campus is located on an approximate 3.2 acre site.  The site was efficiently designed to utilize the maximum extents of the property and accommodate the different needs of the three facilities.
